How UiT Turned Nanofiber Innovation into a Commercial Product

In collaboration with the UiT- The Arctic University of Norway researchers led by Dr. Komal Agarwal, Dr. Krishna Agarwal, and Dr. Biswajoy Ghosh have successfully transformed their electrospinning-based innovation into a commercially licensed product — now available online as AccuRIte™ Calibration Slides for Label-Free Microscopy by Idylle Labs.

Challenge

High-precision optical microscopy techniques require reliable calibration standards that ensure accuracy and consistency in label-free imaging. Conventional calibration slides often fall short in terms of stability, resolution, and ease of use. UiT researchers set out to develop a new, nanostructured calibration material that could deliver robust optical performance across a range of advanced imaging platforms.

Solution

Utilizing their Fluidnatek® electrospinning system, the UiT team engineered nanofiber-based calibration substrates with precise nanoscale features tailored for optical uniformity and reproducibility. Fluidnatek’s platform enabled them to fine-tune process parameters and material compositions, ensuring consistent nanostructure alignment and surface properties across batches. The Fluidnatek LE-50 Gen2 platform supported our research by enabling reproducible production of our samples and facilitating scale-up of fabrication processes. One of the most valuable features is the programmable moving stage, which allows very good control over the deposition area and minimizes undesired fiber accumulation, while being reproducible across batches. The system is intuitive to use and offers a large working area, along with flexible voltage settings and a wide drum rotation range, enabling exploration of diverse fiber configurations.” Komal Agarwal.
